Iloilo City to host ASEAN anti-smoking workshop

ILOILO CITY,Feb.25 (PNA) – Recognizing the initiatives done by this city on sustaining the campaign against smoking and tobacco use, organizers of the 3rd ASEAN Anti Smoking Workshop will conduct the international summit in Iloilo City on May 15-18 to showcase the city's best practices.

The international workshop will be participated in by more than 300 representatives from different cities in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) to discuss the best practices of member nations and innovations introduced to fight tobacco use.

Last week, City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog led the city delegation in receiving the plaque of recognition from the Department of Health (DOH) as a Red Orchid Hall of Fame awardee. The city is a consistent winner for the last three years in 2012, 2013 and 2014 for its innovations and programs to achieve a smoke-free Iloilo City.

Mabilog, accompanied by city councilor Joshua Alim, chairman of the Iloilo City Anti-smoking Task Force (ICAST); and ICAST executive director Inigo Garingalao received the award from the DOH. It was during the ceremony that decided Iloilo City will host the 3rd ASEAN workshop.

Iloilo City was clearly cited for its innovations and initiatives strengthened with the passage of Regulation Ordinance 258 requiring a business license and regulating the sale of tobacco products and Regulation Ordinance 259, Series of 2014 regulating the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products to minors with stores to be located 100 meters away from the schools.

On the other hand, amendments are being prepared for upgrading both city ordinances to include daycare centers in the campaign against smoking.

Mabilog is also planning to include all city hall employees in the no smoking effort and to accept application of jobhires who are not smokers including non-smoking barangay tanods.

The city chief executive said it is the social responsibility of the city to lead in a smoke-free city and to institutionalize the advocacy campaign through the ICAST. (PNA)
