As quoted by Robert Ingersoll, "We rise by lifting others", this reflects the main purpose of Invention-based Enterprise Development (IBED) Program—providing financial support for Filipino inventors in turning an invention into a business enterprise by making it available to the consumers. This program under the Department of Science and Technology—Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) assisted fourteen (14) Filipino inventors from CY 2010-2015, with a total of Php 13,176,888.10 amount of investment provided. Out of TAPI's investment, Php 8,877,874.60 was recovered; number of employment increased by 105 and generated an income of Php 8,080,460.00.

Success under Construction

Among fourteen (14) assisted investors by IBED assistance program, there's a certain individual whose invention moved toward success. Through his interest in the field of construction up to establishing and managing his own company, Mr. Frederick V. Erum was able to develop several invention products. As the president of the Forming Access & Support, Inc. (FASI), he invented one of the sub-systems compromising the formworks equipment and methods of concrete building construction system which is the "Table Form Support System."

Because of good quality of all-aluminum framework equipment and high demands in construction industry, FASI has received a number of orders for their products and one of their clients was EEI Corporation, a contractor of SM Development Corporation (SMDC). The purchase order (PO) was for the rental of the formwork system that will be used in construction of Green Residences, a 56-storey residential building in Taft Avenue, Manila. Nevertheless, with limited funds, Mr. Erum sought the assistance of TAPI to accommodate the requirements of their client. Php 2,999,804, financial assistance was granted to FASI and was recovered after a year.

Since success always comes with a price, FASI was able to earn around Php 4,000,000.00 for the pilot production of Mr. Erum's invention and gave a job opportunity to sixty-one (61) skilled and ordinary labor for EEI.

Leakage of Success

"I learned and discovered things through experiences. If I wanted to solve a problem, I made a solution," quoted by Mr. Melchor L. Heñosa, the inventor of "Leak Sealing Valve for Brake System of Motor Vehicle". As a driver for almost thirteen (13) years, he is familiar on how machinery works—knowing that he didn't attend any formal training about mechanical engineering and automotive. The idea all began when Mr. Heñosa encountered brake fluid leakage while driving for his family.

Recognizing the danger posed by brake fluid leakage, Mr. Heñosa developed an anti-loose brake device to be attached along the fluid pipes of each wheel assembly particularly for PUV. When a leak occurs, the invention will automatically lock the damaged assembly and cuts off the supply of brake fluid to it while allowing the remaining undamaged wheel brake assemblies to function.

Through the help of Mr. Heñosa's colleague and with his own skills, he was able to demonstrate the invention to his target consumers—jeepney drivers and owners from LJODA Transport Cooperative. In fact, he also sought assistance from TAPI for pilot production and market testing which was granted last November 11, 2015 amounting to Php 41,440.00. Additional Php 76,569.68 was granted to Mr. Heñosa on June 11, 2015 for the prototype.

His journey is still ‘on-the-wheels' given that he is pursuing commercialization and mass production of his invention while targeting large automotive companies and eyeing for bigger opportunities. (Rose Marthy Bongon)
