Can your house withstand a 7.2 magnitude earthquake? How do PAGASA meteorologists monitor the typhoon that will hit our area? How can nuclear research help in the industry, and in the agriculture and health sectors? What does it take to become a Pisay student?

All of these random questions from the public can find answers at the 2016 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) celebration in Quezon City. For this year, NSTW will be celebrated simultaneously in all regional offices of Department of Science and Technology (DOST) aside from the four major science hubs in Bicutan, Taguig, Quezon City, Manila, and Los Baņos, Laguna.

The Quezon City Scientific Community, comprised of some DOST agencies, namely; PAGASA, Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), and Philippine Science High School System (PSHS), will conduct several technology open houses, fora, career talks, and contests for the students.

For PAGASA, among the highlights is the Weather Observation Contest for Grade 9 and 10 students on July 28. The goal of the competition is to educate students on how meteorologists come up with accurate weather forecasts for the country. Winners will be judged according to the timeliness, accuracy and their diligence and care for the weather instruments.

Prior to that, lectures on basic knowledge on weather observation will be held first on July 27 under Dr. Marlyn Medina, chief meteorology officer of PAGASA.  Students can learn the basic computations on weather parameters. They could use also various weather instruments like rain gauges, thermometer, wind indicators, and evaporation rate measuring pan, according to Ms. Venus Valdemoro, PAGASA Information Officer.

Meanwhile, PAGASA, PHIVOLCS and PNRI will be co-organizing a Disaster Summit on July 27 which aims to inform the public on how to prepare for natural calamities. Some of the various topics to be discussed are: Multi-hazards Warning Systems and Risk Reduction for Geological Hazards, PAGASA Early Warning Systems, Radiation Monitoring for Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Preparedness and Rehabilitation.

PSHS, on the other hand, will be holding various pre-event activities, such as seminar forum on electricity and design thinking workshop on July 20 to 21, 2016 at PSHS campus in Quezon City.

All agencies under QCSC will showcase different featured technologies in their respective offices from July 25-29.
The 2016 NSTW is open to the public.
