Axis Knee Replacement System, a technology that will provide accessible and affordable knee replacement procedure for many Filipinos, will be among featured products in an open house exhibit on July 25 to 29, 2016 at SM MOA Atrium.

Knee replacement has been performed for more than 40 years around the world and considered as one of the most successful orthopedic procedures in terms of eliminating the pain, reducing the disability, and making the arthritic patients' life much better.

In a knee replacement procedure, surgeon cuts off damaged cartilage and bone from the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee and replaces them with artificial components made of metal and plastic.

Locally-developed knee replacement technology

Funded by DOST-PCHRD and developed by Orthopedic International, Inc, the Axis Knee System is a total knee replacement system that consists of instrumentation and surgical technique enable surgeons to perform the procedure accurately and eliminating the possibility of implant failure.

According to Dr. Ramon Gustilo of Ortophedic International, Inc., the reason for the high cost of knee replacement procedure in the country is that implants here are all imported from Europe and United States. Aside from that, orthopedic doctors to do the procedure have to take specialized training overseas for one year.

Dr. Gustilo said that with the development and commercialization of Axis Knee Replacement System, the cost of knee replacement procedure in the country can be reduced drastically because the knee implants are now made locally by the Dr. Gustilo's Orthopedic International Inc.

The knee implants in the United States and in Europe cost around P100,000 to P120,000, while on Orthopedic International, Inc, the same material will costs around P60,000 for government hospitals and P70,000 for private hospitals.

In Axis Knee System also, orthopedic surgeons can do total knee replacement after training for five days which consists of lectures and hands-on sessions with bone models.

Aside from Axis Knee Replacement System, other DOST products that will be shown during open house exhibit at SM Mall of Asia Atrium are RxBox, e-HATILD LGU, and Biotek-M.
