SAN FERNANDO CITY, May 9 (PIA) -- The City Government of San Fernando in La and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 1 introduced a technology developed to help keep the beaches and waters in La safe and clean.

Eco-friendly Septic Tank System (EcoSep), a DOST-funded technology, was introduced to the participating local government officials, hospital managers, and beach resort owners during a Technology Forum on May 3 at the City Library, Marcos Building, this city.

According to Dr. Paulina Nebrida, assistant regional director for technical operations of DOST-1, EcoSep is a highly-recommended tool which is aimed to promote proper waste management among local governments and to regulate solid, liquid, and medical wastes in business establishments.

"The department is proactive in taking measures to ensure that the beauty and cleanliness of the beaches in La and in the whole Ilocos region are preserved through this technology," Nebrida said.

Racquel M. Espiritu, provincial director of DOST-La also affirmed, "Willing kaming tumulong to resolve any existing problems concerning water pollution in our local waters."

In relation to the environmental issues concerning Boracay island, Espiritu added, "Hindi na nating hihintayin pang maipasara ang mga resorts natin dito before we take action."

With Boracay's six-month closure for rehabilitation, DOST developed mitigating actions such as the possible adoption of EcoSep.

The said activity is in line with the 2018 Science and Technology Caravan on May 2 to 4, a collaborative project of San Fernando City, DOST, and the Office of La First District Representative Pablo C. Ortega.  (ajc/JNPD/MEGRP/PIA-1)
