DOST-10 gives P1.08m to reduce poor diet in Catarman town

CAMIGUIN – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-10, through Camiguin Provincial Science and Technology Center, turned over P1,082,589.40 to Catarman for the improvement of nutritional status among children in 14 barangays of the municipality, July 28.

Ceremonial turnover was held during the 48th Nutrition Month Culmination of the Local Government of Catarman that was received by Mayor Kiterio Antonio U. Palarca II and Eleonor D. Butaya, municipal nutrition action officer designate.

The said assistance is intended for the provision of rice mongo based complementary foods and Enhanced-Nutribun that are both formulated by DOST-Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) to scale down the occurrence of malnutrition in the municipality.

Said complementary foods will be distributed to 14 barangays of municipality namely; Bonbon, Catibac, Lawigan, Bura, Panghiawan, Mainit, Compol, Liloan, Poblacion, Sto. Niño, Looc, Manduao, Alga, and Tangaro.

A total of 326 young children ages 48-72 months will benefit from the project. Of the said number, 162 are males and 164 are females. This project will be implemented through distribution of Rice Mongo Curls for 120 days and supplementation of E-nutribun to the identified children in Catarman that target to improve the nutritional status of 50% of the total identified children.

Through this intervention, DOST-10 targets to provide access to nutritious but affordable food and advocates to educate communities about the importance of nutrition.

Palarca expressed his gratitude to DOST-10 and said he really appreciates the efforts of DOST since the beginning of the CEST implementation in Catarman. (DOST/PIA-10/Camiguin)
