Dengue offensive DOST gives 435,000 mosquito OL traps to all public school classrooms

In a bid to fight dengue , the Department of Science and Technology is distributing some 435,000 Ovicidal-Larvicidal Traps or OL Traps to all public elementary and secondary schools nationwide before the rainy season comes.
“DOST will provide OL Trap kits to every public school classroom all over the country,” DOST Sec. Mario Montejo said. “OL Traps prevent the larvae from maturing into dengue-carrying mosquitoes, thus we aim to contain and reduce the spread of the disease in places where mosquitoes congregate and breed during daytime, like classrooms."
The OL Trap is a simple technology that kills the eggs and larvae of the female Aedes aegypti mosquito that carries the dengue virus. The black container attracts mosquitoes to lay their eggs on the lawanit strip soaked with the OL pellet-water solution. The OL pellets, made of organic and non-toxic material, attract mosquitoes and kill their young, in effect reducing the number of the next generation of mosquitoes.
DOST’s school-based OL Trap program intends to reduce the number of mosquito population in schools and communities, and subsequently lower dengue incidents, through the use of the OL Trap.
“In this program, DOST works very closely with the health, education, and local government departments,” informed Sec. Montejo. “Each agency has a very important role in the program to significantly reduce the number of dengue cases among our school children.”
The program has identified 31 priority areas that will receive the first batch of OL Traps totaling some 435,000 kits nationwide. DOST produced the initial batch of traps and has transferred the production of OL pellets to a private entrepreneur.
DOST, through its National Capital Region office, has also began training teachers who will serve as OL Trap coordinators. Said coordinators learn the procedures of using the OL Trap and preparing monitoring reports. They also learn more about dengue and other anti-dengue initiatives of the government.
“It’s not rocket science,” said Department of Education Undersecretary Jesus Lorenzo Mateo. “The OL Trap is a very simple technology but is effective in helping decrease dengue cases among schoolchildren.“
“We are happy that DOST and the Department of Health is partnering with DepEd in this project,” Mateo added.

Our school organization is working with some urban communities with high incidence of Dengue. We are interested on adding this trap in our series of activities. May we know who to contact at DOST so we can talk about a possible partnership? Thank you.

Hi Ms. Roselle, A positive OL trap means you can find eggs (colored black) of mosquitoes deposited in the lawanit paddle or wrigglers (Kiti), larvae in the black container with the solution. Presence of eggs and larvae of mosquitoes indicates a positive OL Trap. The OL pellets are not totally soluble in water. -Annabelle of ITDI-DOST

hello po. am curious on what a "positive" ol trap looks. could you please post pictures? so far what we have seen are molds formed in the lawanit paddle. there was even a thin cloudy coating found on the surface of the solution. and the pellets remained undissolved. what are indications that it is positive? thanks po.

Hi,
I want tomtry this OL trap for our home. Where can i get them? Is it actually safe if our pet dog accidently drinks it?

Hi po, hopeestheim :-)
1. The lawanit sticks are cleaned every six days to dispose of the eggs laid on them, as well as other microorganisms that may have located there. Further, the lawanit sticks are replaced every month.
2. The solution is drained every six weeks, with the contents poured with hot/boiling water to make sure that eggs and larvae, including other microorganisms, are killed.
3. The solution too, even if taken in, is safe because it is made of organic material (it is even used in your food...).
4. The black cans have been replaced with plastic tumblers long ago, so there is no danger of rust.
5. Just for information the OL Trap is not only for dengue prevention but can also be used to prevent other types of diseases brought about by mosquito. It's just that dengue is the most fatal, so the OL Trap is primed for anti-dengue use.
All OL Trap kits distributed come with brochures, and now even posters distributed to every public elementary and HS classroom nationwide, that contain instructions on how to use the OL Trap properly to maximize its effectiveness.
You may also check out our instructional video here: ://www.science.ph/full_video.php?key=307253 (this is an old video, so it still features the tin can but this has been replaced with plastic tumblers, as mentioned).
Thank you for your comment po as it gave us an opportunity to explain more on the use and effectiveness of the DOST-developed OL Trap. Have a nice day :-) Keep checking out science.ph!

What is being done about the huge tendency to breed molds and other microorganisms on the lawanit boards? Even if the OL Trap could kill the insects' eggs that could be carrying dengue, as long as other harmful microorganisms could grow on the OL Trap solution, the OL Trap endangers the audience (especially children) to which the OL Trap is exposed. What is the point of reducing dengue in general, only to expose people to a different hazard? In addition, the black cans in the picture allow rust to form on it. The OL solution needs to have a broader range in its usefulness and specificity regarding killing-action. Please assure us that the OL Trap kit, as a whole, is not a breeding ground for other health hazards.
