This year’s nutrition month will focus on vegetables. This is to address micronutrient deficiencies; prevent noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes; and increase demand of veggies to help local farmers for their additional income.

This was emphasized by National Nutrition Council 1 (NNC-1) Officer I Emmarose C. Pineda during "Tugtugan at Talakayan" over HotFm in Agoo town recently.

Pineda explained that last year, the nutrition month celebration centered on breastfeeding, but this year on vegetables as less Filipinos are seen eating this food, based on the research conducted by the Department of Science and Technology in 2008.

As highlight of said celebration, the NNC 1 tied up with the Department of Education Division 1 on its launching of a "seedling turnover" on July 2, in Dagupan City.

A ceremonial seed planting from various grade schools that have school gardens in the region will also be undertaken on said day, Pineda added.

Likewise, NNC 1 is mandated to hang its streamers from the different government agencies here depicting the theme “Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw-araw itong ihain” for their awareness of said activity.

“We should practice eating vegetables a day not only for this nutrition month celebration, since there are many benefits that we can get from it such as nutrients and minerals to avoid obesity or even diseases common today,” she further said.
