The first ever Mindanao Science and Technology Park (MSTP) Expo opened on July 31 at the Mindanao Science and Technology Park in Bago Oshiro, Davao City. The event aimed to improve communities' access to science and technology, particularly in the agricultural sector.
The MSTP Expo's theme,"Mindanao Science and Technology Park: A Convergence of Inclusive Growth", introduces the Mindanao Science and Technology Park Consortium to the public and its goal of promoting science and technology innovations through the collaborative effort of its members.
Just a few of the things highlighted at the Expo were:
products that can be used for SME's (handicrafts and food products);
services and technologies farmers can use to improve crop yield and health (testing for plant diseases, organic fertilizers and pesticides, access to experimental plant strains);
technologies that can help agrarian communities protect and preserve the environment (geo-fabrics to control erosion, trainings on crop rotation and organic farming).
"[Davao] is mostly agricultural and in great need of scientific and technological solutions to improve their livelihoods.This expo shows that despite the lack of resources and funds, development can still happen when different groups come together to form a noble convergence," said Congressman Isidro T. Ungab of Davao's third district.
Dr. Anthony C. Sales, Regional Director of DOST XI has said that the MSTPC has every intention of repeating the expo annually, so that more communities all over Mindanao can take advantage of the technologies available to them.
"We want to make science as accessible as possible to as many people. Farmers and groups who need our scientific services can either avail it for free or at a discounted rate. We're open to providing free training and support to communities who want to try any of the technologies and services they see in the Expo," he said.
The Mindanao Science and Technology Park Consortium (MSTPC), the main organizer of the expo, is a non-profit organization comprised of different government agencies (DOST, DTI, DENR, DepEd, and DPWH, among others); the academe (UPMindanao,University of South Eastern Philippines, Phil. Science High School-Southern Mindanao Campus); the local city government; and the private sector (University of Mindanao, Davao City Chamber Of Commerce and Industry Inc.).
The Expo will continue until Wednesday, August 1, 2012, with various activities for students, SMEs' and interested individuals. There will be contests, livelihood training workshop and technology demos for the participants and guests.
