Farmers in this southeastern town of Isabela were urged to plant cacao as an alternative to corn and rice crops.

Virgoneza barangay captain Solomon Mayor, said the planting of cacao is another income generating activity of farmers other than the primary products of rice and corn.

Mayor said cacao is used as ingredient in making chocolates and other products.

Mayor has seen good marketing price of cacao in the market that is why he himself has propagated cacao seedlings hoping that the seedlings will be planted in the town by concerned and interested residents.

The DOST is helping the marketing of cacao seeds which are essential ingredients in major processed food in the country.

Solomon said that a kilo of cacao seeds is sold at P100 that is why he and his family are engaged in cacao production in San Agustin.
