DOST-MIRDC bares S&T services in science week

In the upcoming National Science and Technology Week 2018slated on July 17-21, 2018 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City, Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will be holding  a forum to showcase the different S&T services provided by the center that includes the various testing facilities.

The forum will be held on 18 July 2018 from 1:00-3:00PM with Engr. Rodnel O. Tamayo, chief science research specialist of the DOST-MIRDC's Materials and Process Research Division of DOST-MIRDC.  Engr. Tamayo will  present the DOST-MIRDC's Auto Parts testing Laboratory; the Die and Mold Solution Center; the Gear Making and Assembly Facility; the Finite Element Analysis Design Center; the Surface Engineering Facility; and the Investment Casting.

The Gear Making and Assembly Facility will provide a big boost in enhancing the competitiveness of the local gear making industry particularly in localizing gears that are presently being imported. This will provide cheaper but quality made components using nine major state-of-the-art equipment acquired from 2015 to 2017. Some of the machineries are the following: Gear Measuring Equipment; Dynamic Balancer (CIMAT-1500 H2P), CNC 5-axis Vertical Machining Center (Okuma MU-6300V), CNC Gear Hobbing Machine (GE25A), Vacuum Carburizing Machine, CNC Gear Shaping Machine (ST25CNC), CNC Gear Shaving Machine (FE30A), Deburring and Broaching Machines.

Also, the center has acquired the Gear Software (KISSsoft and Kisssys). KISSsoft is a design software used to perform accurate size calculations for machine elements. KISSsys depicts a complete system of machine elements and is used for strength calculation of each element.

These machineries are made available for the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through a shared-service facility scheme at very reasonable rates.   (Rodolfo P. de Guzman, S&T Media Service)
