1st MSTCC meeting held, S&T projects for San Fabian seen

"S&T is a vital component in the development of the town especially in the municipality of San Fabian kasi nakikita namin na talagang without it, we cannot assure development," said Mr. Antonio Supremido, Executive Secretary to Mayor Constante B. Agbayani of San Fabian, Pangasinan. With this recognition, the Municipal Science and Technology Coordinating Council (MSTCC) of San Fabian had its first meeting to identify possible development projects on Science and Technology for the community.

Dr. Armando Q. Ganal, DOST1 Regional Director, reiterated the programs and projects of DOST that can be availed by the community. One of the programs which he highlighted is the assistance in the packaging and labeling of the community's primary products such as the tuyo (dried fish) and tupig (sweet rice delicacy wrapped with banana leaves). Other programs he mentioned is the assistance on food safety to food processors, consultancy services, laboratory analysis, and product promotion.

Community-based development projects through MSTCC were also identified during the meeting. These include the development of "Tikog" or "Bangkuang" (Sagittaria aquatica Lam.) into handicrafts; vinegar and wine production from Nipa sap; and development of seaweeds, coconut husks, and other resources into products. Livelihood trainings in the target communities were also scheduled through the Satellite office the Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) of Pangasinan while the MSTCC would be working for a six- year work and financial plan from 2017 to2022.

The Municipality of San Fabian is the first LGU that hosted the S&T Caravan in 2016 and created the MSTCC through an Executive Order to identify and coordinate possible S&T interventions and projects in the area.
