The Department of Science and Technology through the Science and Technology Information Institute (DOST-STII) recently oriented the three campuses of the Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU) on the Integrated Philippine Electronic Library (iPeL) Project at the DMMMSU- North La Campus Library.

With the aim to increase awareness on DOST IPEL Project, the librarians, Information Technology (IT) staff, and other concerned faculty members of the three campuses of DMMMSU were oriented and trained on the operation of iPeL System. The two-day activity covered demonstration and lectures on the proper set-up of the iPeL System equipment, configuration and calibration of camera, and presentation on digitization, and Advance TIFF Editor Plus. Demonstration and hands-on training on scanning and editing was also held followed by an open forum where concerns on the IPEL System was discussed.

DOST1 Regional Director, Dr. Armando Q. Ganal expressed his full support on the adoption of iPeL Project in all the libraries of State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the region. "This is a very laudable project as it endeavors to establish an integrated library system that conforms to international standards, with a very stable infrastructure and network connectivity. Very soon, we will have a network of institutions that will benefit from the digitized journals and eReferences," says Dr. Ganal in his message read by his representative, Michael John Maquiling, Science Research Specialist II.

He also urged the SUCs to take advantage of the project for the benefit of all library users as he vowed his continuous support for its acknowledgment in the higher institutions.

iPeL Project or Philippine eLib is an electronic library project under the Medium-Term Information and Communications Technology (ICT)- Harmonized Initiatives- Higher Education Cluster (MITHI-HEC) program of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and collaborated to several government agencies and SUCs such as DOST, Department of Agriculture (DA), Commission on Higher Educations (CHED), National Library of the Philippines (NLP), and University of the Philippines.

It enables library users to access online resources/subscription to electronic databases, digitized Filipiniana materials including theses and dissertations; special collection or researches; and online resources/subscription to electronic databases; and catalog of the five partner agencies and SUC.

The project is also being coordinated to five other SUCs around the country and DMMMSU was chosen to pilot the iPeL system in Region 1.
