ROXAS CITY, Capiz, 14 July (PIA6) – Science Research Specialist Victor Alfonso, Jr. of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) has encouraged members of the Nutrition Communications Network (Nutricomnet) in the province to access and register at the iFNRI portal to get into the online resource for nutrition and food information.

The website, i.fnri.dost.gov.ph, is an authoritative online resource for all types of consumers like policymakers and planners, food manufacturers, students, extension workers and even homemakers who need nutrition and food information.

"The initiative aims to provide more solutions to persistent malnutrition to help improve the lives of the Filipinos," Alfonso noted.

The iFNRI is an umbrella program that develops, integrates and harmonizes the different FNRI Information and Communication Technology (ICT) projects.

It has six program components that include iAssess, iServe, iPromote, iLearn and iAdmin.

He further discussed that iAssess creates, administers and provides thorough analysis of anthropometric tests, recipe and menu evaluation online while iServe makes laboratory processes more automated for efficient and effective workflow.

The portal's iBusiness menu enables the institute to link its internal and external data processing systems more efficiently and flexibly to work more closely with suppliers and partners.

Another component, iPromote, delivers promotional marketing messages and products to various FNRI clients.

The iLearn helps various clients with or without nutrition background by offering numerous types of media platforms to teachers, students and nutrition advocates while iAdmin creates a paperless office to improve productivity, performance and total transparency, Alfonso explained.

The iFNRI site has, among others, a salt calculator and packages of information on nutrition intervention to reduce the prevalence of underweight among 6 to 35 months old children through 120-days feeding of children with FNRI-DOST developed complementary food blends and snack curls complemented with nutrition education among mothers/caregivers on basic nutrition, breastfeeding, complementary feeding, meal planning, safe food handling and preparation, and backyard gardening.

The online resource is in line with the FNRI's mandate of providing relevant technologies and scientific information on food and nutrition as it intends to facilitate transfer of technologies from FNRI to health and nutrition program implementers, households and communities.
