During the Rotary Club of Davao gathering last July 27, 2017, the Davao-based inventor, Emiliano Quitiol, had the opportunity to share and discuss his invention, a biofuel made out of recycled and used cooking oil.

Way back 2003, he started to develop his invention called the EFQ Bioforce. He admitted that he wasn't successful at first, but now he says he finally perfected his biofuel.

"Fresh cooking oil after using for several times is considered a toxic substance and hazardous", Quitiol said.

"Utilizing used cooking oil as raw material for the production of EFQ Fuel and Oil Additive will pave the way in solving the proper disposal of used cooking oil and will assure the public health and safety," added Quitiol.

His idea stemmed from his determination to contribute in curbing pollution. He mentioned that his invention will eventually help rebuild the bodies of water from having spillage and contaminants that may deteriorate the habitat of marine life.

But how does his product work? According to Quitiol, only 1mL of his product is added to a liter of fuel to act and rearrange the molecular structure of the conventional fuel into chain branching of hydrocarbon atoms. This allows more efficient fuel combustion and consequently, reduces air pollution.

Currently, Quitiol already have three kinds of products named as EFQ Bio Force Diesel Additive, EFQ Bio Speed Gasoline Additive, and EFQ BioPower Engine Oil Additive.

Quitiol won the DOST- National Invention Contest and Exhibit (NICE) in 2014. He became a beneficiary of the Invention Based Enterprise Development (IBED) Program of DOST- Technology Application and Promotions Institute (TAPI). IBED is a program intended to encourage and transform innovations into a technology enterprise. It covers pilot production, field/market testing and formulation of systems and procedures in preparation for a larger production scale. The program also aims to build the capabilities of inventors to create businesses out of their inventions.
