13 NegOr pupils qualify for PSHS scholarship

DUMAGUETE CITY (Dec 28, 2017) – Thirteen incoming first year high school students from Negros Oriental passed the 2017 National Competitive Examination (NCE) for the scholarship offered by the Department of Science & Technology's Philippine Science High School System (DOST-PSHSS) for Central Visayas Campus in Talaytay, Argao, Cebu.

Among those who qualified are: Jillianne Duran of ABC Learning Center; Venze Edwin Leonard Cuba of ABC Learning Center-Tanjay City; Cassey Khaye Bonachita, Jezryll James Ege and Yssa Sophia Jumalon of West City Exceptional Child Learning Center; Cyrille Pauline Bantaya and Lahja Hannah Vinarao of West City Science Elementary School; Anton Gabriel Asignar and Angel Corinne Jane Bitong of St. Louis School-Don Bosco in Dumaguete City; Keren Anne Uy and Henry Yap III of Bais City Special Science Elementary School; Allen Buck Diao of Bayawan City Science and Technology Education Center and Carl Cadungog of Bayawan City East Central School.

The PSHS scholars get a monthly stipend in addition to free tuition and free loan of textbooks. Uniform, transportation and living allowances are also given according to financial need. The PSHS System, as mandated under Section 2 of Republic Act 3661, aims to offer free scholarship for secondary course with special emphasis to subjects pertaining to the sciences with the end view of preparing its students for a future science career.

The PSHS system identified a total of 90 passers eligible for PSHS Central Visayas Campus. This year's passers represent about 15% of the total 85 examinees in the province who took the nationwide exam on October 21, 2017 at Silliman University, Dumaguete City. A total of 26,600 examinees underwent the qualifying test and only 1,361 passed, yielding a national passing rate of 5.12%.

Qualifiers are requested to immediately contact the Registrar or the Campus Director of the PSHS Campus where they are eligible to enroll, or visit the following websites: www.pshs.edu.ph or www.dost.gov.ph for more information on early enrollment.

Deadline for slot confirmation/reservation of principal qualifiers is on January 15, 2018 for Main Campus qualifiers and on February 2, 2018 for Regional Campus qualifiers.
