BAGUIO CITY, Jan. 19 (PIA) -- Science and technology (S&T) awareness among Cordillera students is expected to be heightened with the installation of digital libraries in at least 42 public schools in the region.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Education (DepEd) signed a memorandum of agreement for the installation of the Science & Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated Kiosk System (STARBOOKS) in the region's identified 42 public schools.

DOST-CAR Assistant Regional Director Nancy Bantog said recipients are 11 schools in Abra, five in Apayao, seven in Benguet, two in Ifugao, four in Kalinga, and 13 in Mountain Province. Nineteen will be powered through solar while 23 units will be run through electricity.

STARBOOKS, dubbed as the first Philippine S&T digital library, is a stand-alone information source designed to bring S&T information to the grassroots. It is a library in a box; the information is in digitized form and they are in software and can be installed in a computer.

It aims to provide S&T–based educational and learning resources in various formats specifically to geographically-isolated schools and local government units where there is no internet connection.

Bantog announced that in areas where there is no electricity, the DOST provides solar powered computer that contains the information.

The STARBOOKS contains thousands of local and foreign S&T resources in various formats such as books, journals, scientific research papers covering topics on different branches of science. It also features DOSTkarte livelihood videos, interactive science and math courseware, disaster mitigation, DOST technologies, educational videos, among others.

The STARBOOKS is also open not only to schools but to interested local government units and non-government organizations.

The 2018 partnership between DOST and DepEd also aims to beef up the availability of the digital library to students, researchers and other stakeholders in their respective provincial offices. (JDP/MAWC – PIA CAR)
