LAL-LO, Cagayan, Feb. 1 (PIA) -- Some 200 barangay officials and farmers here attended the orientation and training of science and technology programs and services of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in collaboration with the Local Government Unit (LGU) in this town on 31 January 2018.

Engr. Sylvia Lacambra, provincial director, said if Cauayan City in Isabela province is called the smarter city in the Cagayan Valley region, Lal-lo town, on the other hand, is potential and eyed by the DOST as the smarter municipality.

She said this vision for the municipality is not too far to happen as DOST Region 2 and LGU Lal-lo have forged a strong partnership in the promotion of their different programs especially the SET-UP and carrageenan plant growth regulator advocacy.

For her part, Cagayan First District Board Member Ma. Olivia B. Pascual has expressed her thanks to the DOST for always being responsive to the needs of Lalloqueños citing the Citronella Project of the Rural Improvement Club (RIC) of Lal-lo supported by the DOST's SET-UP.

SET-UP or the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program, according to Romeo Puyat, project assistant III, aims to support and sustain the growth of the micro small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) not only in the region but nationwide.

Puyat said DOST wants to help interested owners of MSMEs to increase sales and production, streamline and improve overall company operations, upgrade the quality of products and services, conform to national and international standards of excellence, and be competitive in their respective fields.

"We at the DOST continuously encourage more MSMEs and entrepreneurs to actively participate to SET-UP," Puyat added.

For his part, Matt Ezekiel Abella, project assistant III, has challenged the farmer-participants to increase their productivity and yield.

Abella said, CPGR, a plant supplement that when applied at low concentrations in rice has been found to enhance the yield by 20–30 percent or above.

It should be noted that in Isabela province, DOST's Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources (DOST-PCAARRD) first distributed CPGRs at the Isabela State University Echague campus for demonstration trials and eventually proved that is effective in increasing their yield.

Abella said that in order to expect better result, CPGR is being applied at 3 li/ha per scheduled application every 12–15 days after transplanting (DAT), 30–35 DAT, and 45–50 DAT.

When asked if CPGR can be applied to other plants such as vegetables and flowering plants, Abella has emphasized that they do not recommend, however, he shared that there were farmers who already tried and yielded positive result.

"This is what I want to share, that as farmers have your own kind of research," Abella said.

Mayor Florante C. Pascual, on the other hand, has extended his support to all the programs of DOST and is looking forward for more partnerships in the months to come.

"It is nice that DOST has programs and projects like these to help us especially the farming and agriculture sector," Pascual said, emphasizing that agriculture is one of his priority programs. (ALM/MDCT/ PIA 2 - Cagayan)
