DOST-PhiVolcs completes reconstruction of earthquake monitoring station damaged by Typhoon Yolanda

QUEZON CITY, Mar. 9 -- The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) will inaugurate the reconstructed Palo Seismic Station on 14 March 2018, 8 am at Palo Seismic Station, Barangay Arado, Palo, Leyte.  

In 2013, Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) damaged the PHIVOLCS Palo Seismic Station. After 4 years, DOST-PHIVOLCS has completed the reconstruction of the earthquake monitoring station in Palo, Leyte. It now operates using dual electricity source, solar power as the main power source and commercial electricity. 

PHIVOLCS continuously expands the Philippine Seismic Network by establishing earthquake monitoring stations located strategically all over the country. This earthquake monitoring station has and will significantly benefit the Province of Leyte through increased detectability of events and more accurate and timely determination of earthquake parameters of events generated by active earthquake sources in and around the province. These parameters are important inputs for detailed assessment of earthquake hazards that could possibly affect the province which then is used for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) plan of the province. This plan is a very important tool for decision-makers to come-up with right information provided to the public and respond properly when earthquakes occur. 

Eastern Visayas, including Leyte, is one of the seismically active areas in the country because of the Philippine Fault and the Philippine Trench, which are the main earthquake generators that can affect the area. In addition, there are other local faults which can be sources of small to large-magnitude earthquakes. Last year, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit the province with the epicenter located 15 kilometer northeast of Ormoc City, Leyte. 

Following the inauguration, PHIVOLCS will hold a press conference dubbed as PHIVOLCS InfoSentro that aims to give an update regarding the earthquake monitoring stations located in Palo and nearby areas, and PHIVOLCS' projects and Disaster Risk Reduction programs to enhance the public's means of preparedness for geologic events. (PhiVolcs)
