DOST Negros Oriental holds calibration training

DUMAGUETE CITY (July 30, 2018) –  Close to 40 participants from local and national government units, sugar and coconut milling companies and large shopping centers in the province attended the two-day training on weighing scale calibration on July 24-25, 2018 at the Negros Oriental Technology & Livelihood Development Center (TLDC) in Daro, Dumaguete City.

Organized by the  Department of Science and Technology-Negros Oriental Provincial S&T Center (DOST NegOr PSTC), the  training  aims to give importance of fair trade on the calibration of industrial weighing scales on various applications and the acceptability level on error readings of weighing scales in the market. The event also aims at highlighting on the importance of calibration which includes public health and safety, fair market trade, consumer protection, among others.

The activity is in cooperation with Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NOCCI), Provincial Government of Negros Oriental and DOST 7. Engr. Roberto B. Edra, the laboratory head of DOST-7 Regional Standards and Testing Laboratory (RSTL) was the resource person during the said training.

During the quick but very informative training, Engr. Edra expounded on the metrology, calibration, metrology situation in the Philippines, existing Philippine metrology laws, measurement standards, traceability, weighing scales, correct procedure of calibrating various types of weighing scales and computation on maximum permissible errors. Other topics include mass, measurement, subfields of metrology, legal metrology and metrology organizations. The speaker also discussed on proper care of weights, methods of weighing, weighing errors and their causes, minimum accuracy class of weights used with weighing instrument and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML).

"Traceability is an unbroken chain of calibration necessary for the measurements done in the country to be traceable to international standards. The starting point of International Standards begins with the Bureau International des Poids et Measures (BIPM). Its mandate is to provide the basis for a single coherent system of measurements throughout the world. It is important that your test weights used in monitoring the public markets have traceability," Engr. Edra also added.

Engr. Edra is the laboratory head and quality manager of DOST 7 RSTL. He was formerly connected with DOST ITDI (Industrial Technology Development Institute) where the National Metrology Laboratory of the Philippines is located. He has been involved in numerous trainings nationwide and abroad on weighing scale calibration, among others.
