The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) celebrated the 2018 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW) on 17-21 July 2018 at the World Trade Center, Pasay City.

With the theme, "Innovation for Collective Prosperity," the 2018 NSTW celebration brought local technologies and products which create positive impacts to the daily living of ordinary Filipinos.

The venue has also made the efforts and contributions of the DOST closer to the communities by exhibiting such innovations that can be applied at home, in school, or even at the workplace.

Furthermore, a marketplace through the OneStore in the exhibition area featuring DOST-generated and -assisted products from all over the regions caught the attention of visitors.

Under Proclamation No. 169, the NSTW aims to showcase the scientific and technological breakthroughs and innovations in the country and eventually gain substantial support from the public and private sectors to promote sustainable development.

With the exhaustive line-ups of exhibits, technology fora, demonstrations, interactive activities, and special events, the DOST has established its strong commitment in conveying science for the people.

"Innovate or perish is President Rodrigo Roa Duterte's parting message during the 2018 Mindanao National Science and Technology Week in Davao and that message from the President certainly gives us the strength and aspiration to continue our endeavors in promulgating science, technology, and innovation," said DOST Secretary Fortunato T. De La Peña during the Opening Ceremonies.

Moreover, Secretary De La Peña presented the accomplishments of the Department in terms of complying with the Philippine Development Plan in areas of agriculture, health, space science, human resource development, technology transfer, food and nutrition, and science communication.

He also mentioned the passing of the Balik Scientist Program into law as a way of addressing the lack of scientists in the country working for research and development, the granting of DOST scholarships to 77 students of Marawi, and the opening of halal laboratories across the regions.

Consequently, the Eduardo A. Quisumbing Medal for Outstanding Basic Research was given to Dr. Carla B. Dimalanta for her research on sinkhole mapping and the Dioscoro L. Umali Medal for Outstanding Science Administrator to Mr. Edgardo C. Tulia during the NSTW Opening Ceremonies.

The ceremony also witnessed the launching of the Electronics Products Inclusive Innovation Center (EPIIC) with Secretary Ramon M. Lopez of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

EPIIC encourages and support Filipino entrepreneurs to build, design, and manufacture electronic products that can be put into the local or even global market.

The 2018 NSTW was a perfect venue in bringing together everyone in the science community from technology developers and inventors, science and technology (S&T) service providers, and the general public for potential linkages and collaborative opportunities.

The week-long, annual celebration attended by partners and stakeholders in the country has proven that a science and technology culture in the Philippines is alive.
