The National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) has successfully conducted its first major recruitment drive this year, enlisting at least 50 qualified researchers for membership from the Cebu Technological University (CTU), a government-run premier university in the island of Cebu, during its membership seminar held recently at the CTU Danao Campus, Danao, Cebu.

At least 200 faculty researchers from 10 different campuses of CTU attended the event.

"We are very privileged that NRCP accommodated our request and I believe that NRCP membership could offer a platform that could strengthen the research capabilities of our researchers," according to   CTU University President Rosein Ancheta, Jr.

NRCP began its active information drive in 2017 with the aim of evenly spreading membership opportunities particularly in the regions.

NRCP Executive Director Marieta Baņez Sumagaysay said in her message that NRCP has more than 4000 members to date and a large chunk of which is concentrated in the National Capital Region. She added that the universities in regions are a great source of untapped scientific and technological manpower and having them as members of NRCP could help create impact on regional development in terms of education, research and innovation.

"Universities have an ever-expanding role of driving a vibrant research and innovation environment in our country today. This is where we (as a country) are being gauged as far as global competitiveness index is concerned," Sumagaysay added.

Aside from membership seminar, NRCP also shared lecture on its National Integrated Basic Research Agenda (NIBRA), the council's research direction until 2022 which is aligned to the DOST's National Harmonized Research and Development Agenda.

Dr. Ruby Raterta, chief of NRCP Research Development and Management Division, led the lecture on NIBRA and gave practical tips on how to align the regional research priorities to NIBRA for basic and fundamental researches and strategies to boost the chance of getting project proposals of this nature funded.

Another lecture given is on the RD Leadership Program, a component of the DOST's Science for Change Program, that aims to capacitate HEIs and research institutes in the regions by contracting experts who would assist the institution achieve scientific and technological efficiency and competitiveness.

The NRCP implements the RD Leadership Program and is tapping its pool of experts for the consultancy work.

Among the CTU campuses that participated in the activity are CTU main campus (Lahug), CTU Moalboal, CTU Barili, CTU Tuburan, CTU Danao, CTU Camotes, CTU San Francisco, CTU Daan Bantayan, CTU Carmen and CTU Argao.

These campuses have initially planned of coming up with program proposals that could create impact on regional development and innovation and integrating the important contributions of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences in the regional research landscape.

The management of CTU pledged full support to this NRCP's recruitment drive and is hoping for another round of orientation that would also include other universities in the region in the coming months.
