The Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-TAPI) officially awarded the gold medals from the prestigious 46th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva to two Filipino technologies during the Closing and Awarding Ceremonies of the 2018 National Invention Contest and Exhibit (NICE) on 16 August 2018 at the Le Pavillon, Metropolitan Park in Pasay City.

The 46th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, the biggest and most important event devoted to recognizing inventions around the world, was conducted on 11-15 April 2018 at the Geneva Palexpo Arena in Geneva, Switzerland.

Smart Surface of the University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman and Biotek-M of UP Manila was able to bring home gold medal with the congratulations of the jury and gold medal, respectively, from the said international exhibition.

"Receiving this recognition is a humbling experience and hopefully an inspiration to the young scientists to bring the Philippine banner all over the world," said Dr. Raul P. Destura, technology developer of Biotek-M.

Biotek-M, a medical diagnostic technology for dengue, poses opportunities to early detection of the disease especially in the marginalized communities where dengue cases are most often reported.

"When we developed the technology, we do not have awards in mind. We are merely having fun creating the technology," said Dr. Nestor Michael C. Tiglao, technology developer of Smart Surface.

Smart Surface technology, an interactive display platform, is an electronic sensor system which converts virtually any flat surface into an interactive one for diverse applications.

Both technologies were assisted by DOST-TAPI through the Technology Innovation for Commercialization (TECHNICOM) Program for scaling-up the production and rolling-out and optimizing the products, pilot-testing and validating the technology, and other activities supporting the development of the technologies.

"Our programs support the promotion, transfer, and commercialization of technologies in order to bring out the best of our local inventors and innovators as a means to contribute to economic development," said DOST-TAPI Director Edgar I. Garcia.

S & T Trivia

" Besides inventing the banana vinegar, Maria Carlita Rex-Doran also produced an ampalaya (bittermelon) concoction for diabetes mellitus and HIV infection. The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) conferred on her the Gold Medal in 1989, four years after another Filipina inventor, Olympia Gonzales, achieved the same award. "
