The members of the Cluster Business Organization (CBO), the LAKIMANPELIBA (Lagumit, Kinanga, Manuel Peralta, and Little Baguio) Farmer's Association actively participated in the "Abaca Weaving and Dyeing Training" held last July 24-29, 2018 at Brgy. Lagumit, Malita, Davao Occidental. The 6-day training was conducted in cooperation with the Department of Science and Technology's (DOST) Provincial S&T Center in Davao Occidental together with Provincial Local Government Unit-Project Management Unit (PLGU-PMU). The training involved learning the process of abaca dyeing, warping, and weaving using the handloom equipment.

The training envisioned that the participants will be given a sustainable livelihood to help their husband generate income for their families. A starter kit was provided by the PLGU-PMU for the women to start their handloom weaving business.

The Provincial S&T Director, Ms. Maria Victoria I. Dado officially turned over handloom equipment which was purchased under the Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology (CEST) Program of the department to the members of LAKIMANPELIBA Farmers Association in the presence of the representative of Gov. Claude Bautista, SP Board Member Allan Colina, PMU Project Manager, Ms. Grace Ann A. Baribar, and the Provincial Women Livelihood Development Coordinator, Ms. Marianela C. Malinao.

Ms. Dado hopes that the association would take care and maximize the utilization of the handloom equipment. "Together hand in hand we will make your handwoven abaca products be known not only in the region but to the world and that the abaca fibers and products from Davao Occidental are of high quality," added Ms. Dado. (Photo and text by Jocel Ann Bajenting PSTC Davao Occidental)
