Baguio City – The Executive Director of the Philippine Science High School (PSHS also called Pisay), Dr. Lilia T. Habacon, expressed high hopes that her campus directors, teachers, and students would further make a difference in all other high schools in the Philippines during the trainors' training for the Invent School Program of the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) at the Holiday Inn, 27 August.

Speaking before selected participants from Pisay campuses in Luzon, Habacon highlighted the relevance and necessity of the project as they embark on product development and researches. Pisay is the premier science high school in the Philippines.

As the forefront of Science, Technology, and Innovation training and part of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) system, Pisay will be the future mentors, trainors and the strategic partner of the institute in implementing ISP.

"With the help of DOST-TAPI, we could protect the scholars. Scholars are doing a lot of tasks, as far as the innovation and research is concerned. They need to learn the recourse of filing intellectual property rights. At the same time, we would also like to improve their innovative skills and creativity. With this workshop, we are hoping the two targets will be achieved," Habacon further mentioned.

The seminar-workshop was the first of capacity building for high school innovators and inventors under the Human Resource Development Program (HRDP) funding entitled, "Capacity Building for Philippine Science High School for the Invent School Implementation", organized and facilitated by DOST-TAPI.

"I hope that there will be more cooperation between the two and DOST-TAPI will be able to facilitate to enhance the capability of PSHS system", Habacon added.

The event also became a platform for the Pisay campus directors, faculty members, and student to meet and build connection as they will soon be the first batch of trainors for more upcoming Invent School programs.

Back in Bicutan, Taguig City, where DOST-TAPI is headquartered, Atty. Marion Ivy D. Decena, chief of its Invention Development Division (IDD), affirmed that since the program has been receiving a number of requests from PSHS in the various parts of the country, this partnership will be able to reach out areas that have not yet availed ISP seminar and accommodate a greater, better number package of services.

"We will expect an increase in the number of IP filing coming from the PSHS after this training given the learning/awareness as to the importance of IP protection." Decena said.

DOST-TAPI also noted that the ISP has reached over 700 schools and more than 5,000 students and faculty members nationwide.

DOST-TAPI in-house experts Mr. Caezar Angelito E. Arceo, Supervising Science Research Specialist; Ms. Anna Liza B. Saet, ISP Program Manager; and Engr. Roberto B. Verzosa, Senior Science Research Specialist served as the experts and facilitators of the training.

The three-day training-workshop was handled by speakers from various fields, in particular by Engr. Wilfredo Calaguan of Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHIL) who discussed the importance of intellectual property rights; Engr. Wilfredo Lim of Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) on the significance of prototyping; and Ms. Chona Suner-Narvadez of PhilRice on the necessity of considering the target market of a technology in terms of commercialization. Mr. Arceo lectured on invention development.

Pisay campus directors, faculty members, and students from Ilocos, Bicol, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, MIMAROPA, Cordillera Administrative Region, and National Capital Region attended the event and will have to complete the course through an actual Invent School workshop.
