CARRAGEENAN PGP SHOWCASED IN RICE FARMERS' FIELD DAY

Over 30 farmer cooperators from Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental participated in the Farmers’ Field Day on March 05, 2019. Held at Sitio Calamagoy, Poblacion, Magsaysay, Davao del Sur, the activity is part of the project titled: “Field Verification Testing of Carrageenan Plant Growth Promoter (PGP) for Enhanced Growth and Induced Pest and Disease Resistance in Rice.”

Headlining the event were Ms. Helen Carampatana, RPA, Municipal Agriculturist; Mr. Jose A. Villar II, Regional Rice R&D Coordinator of Department of Agriculture Region XI (DA XI); Dr. Gil L. Magsino, Project Leader of the National Crop Protection Center of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (NCPC-UPLB).

The undertaking aims to promote the benefits of using Carrageenan PGP on rice which is expected to boost rice production in the region. By 2020, the Carrageenan PGP Project aims to increase rice productivity by 34% from 4.02–5.40 tons/hectare nationwide.

The project implementers and other cooperating agencies include the DA XI, DOST XI, and the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD). The R&D Program on Carrageenan is one of the programs under the Industry Strategic S&T Plan (ISP) for rice.
