THE Philippines needs to aggressively strengthen its science, technology and innovation capacities, particularly of the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), to achieve inclusive growth in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

Ferdinand Ferrer, chairman of Science and Technology Committee of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), urged technology owners and generators, investors, government, end-users and other stakeholders to collaborate to develop technologies, and create and sustain the country’s innovation ecosystem.

“We have to be in step with this disruption brought about by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Our economy is already among the fastest growing in the Asean (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region; we cannot be left behind again,” he said during the recent 2019 National Technology Transfer Day.

Ferrer, also the trustee for the Electronics sector of the Philippine Exporters Confederation Inc., said the development and proper application of new technologies is important for spurring and sustaining Philippine strides towards becoming a middle and high income country.

“Our neighbors Korea, Japan, Malaysia, China, and even India have shown the way and shown the success,” he added.

Ferrer underscored the crucial role of Technology Application and Promotion Institute (Tapi) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in ensuring that the country has industry-appropriate technology that will bolster the agricultural, industry, services and advanced information technology (IT) development, and improve the quality of healthcare.

The use of technology and innovation can boost the competitiveness of the MSMEs, he added.

Ferrer said the PCCI is committed on promoting awareness on new technologies and mechanisms to facilitate technology transfer, acquisition, and skills to use them effectively.

“To further complement the efforts of DOST, the PCCI has been aggressively promoting appreciation and application of intellectual property rights among local enterprises and potential entrepreneurs,” he added.
