LAOAG CITY—The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on Wednesday conducted a food processing seminar attended by villagers mostly housewives and unemployed residents of this city.

At least 30 participants joined the training at the Senior Citizens Center where they were taught how to make "kamias"(cucumber tree) candy.

The DOST partnered with Barangay Poblacion to train villagers on simple livelihood tips to boost their daily income.

Aside from kamias candy making, the participants also witnessed demonstration on juicing fruit and leafy greens to promote a healthy lifestyle. Among these are locally available fruits like duhat (Java plum), mangoes, pineapples and calamansi (lime), among others.

Poblacion village chief Joegie Jimenez said they are thankful for the DOST training program.

"We hope to organize more livelihood trainings in the village for all interested individuals to maximize their potential and earn more for a living," said Jimenez citing the influx of tourists in Burgos town that also brings in economic opportunities for villagers.

After the training, Jimenez said they will also organize the Poblacion Burgos Food Processor Association where other livelihood trainings such as meat processing will be conducted for the residents.

When dealing with food processing, the DOST emphasized the importance of ensuring food safety norms to meet international standards.

To observe food safety standards, the Food and Drugs Administration is now requiring food processors of "longganisa" (sausage) and "chicharon" (crispy pork skin), among others, to have their products undergo microbial testing and analysis in order for them to be granted a license to operate.(PNA)
