DOST, CSU to establish e-trike hub

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, July 3 (PIA) -- The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 2 and the Cagayan State University have proposed for the establishment of electric-powered tricycle (e-trike) hub at the Cagayan Valley’s Regional Government Center (RGC) in this city.

DOST Assistant Regional Director Virginia Bilgera presented the proposal during the joint Regional Development Council (RDC) and Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) meeting held in Cauayan City, Isabela on June 19.

The proposal aims to establish a hub for local e-trike manufacturing up to 2022 which will serve as one of the major short distance transport vehicles in the region.

She said CSU is now conducting studies on e-trike deployment and utilization, and e-trike installation and stability in support to the mass transport research and development agenda of the government.

“The general objective of these project is to produce Philippine-made e-trike vehicles through the establishment of the e-trike research and development hub in region 2,” Bilgera said.

She further said the establishment of the hub also aims to automate the local production of e-trike and to develop, test and evaluate its fabrication process.

“We also aim to increase the efficiency of the e-trike charging system with the integration of alternative energy and utilize information technology system to improve tracking and data recording,” Bilgera added.

She said they proposed for P148.67 million budgetary requirements which will be funded through the DOST’s Niche Center in the Region (NICER) program.

Bilgera also said that the project will support DOST’s endeavor to significantly accelerate science, technology and innovation as the key drivers of productivity, growth and advancement in order to enhance countryside development.

She also said the produced e-trikes will serve as the major transport system of all employees and clienteles of the regional government agencies at the RGC.

The RGC in Carig this city serves as the seat of regional governance but there are no regular service transport vehicles plying around the center. (MDCT/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
