DAVAO CITY, Sept. 9, (PIA) – The soon to be re-opened Regional Science Centrum in Bago Oshiro, Tugbok, Davao City is designed to bring science, technology, and engineering to communities.

During the Memorandum of Understanding Signing and Press Conference held Monday at the Grand Regal Hotel, Department of Science and Technology XI (DOST XI) Regional Director Dr. Anthony Sales stressed that the centrum has to operate on its goal of bringing in the concepts of science and technology to address the concerns and problems in the communities.

“This time our strategy in reviving the centrum is building  on what we have and adding more exhibits and facilities thru the help of our stakeholders who will assist in terms of financial, information, and other resources,” said Sales.

The DOST tapped stakeholders from the academe, industry, government, and civil society to ensure the sustainability of the facility.

Sales admitted that the issues on management and sustainability were not addressed in the previous years which resulted to the closure of the former Mindanao Science Centrum.

He added that the DOST also realized that making the centrum intended to cater the entire Mindanao would be ambitious. This made the DOST XI decide to scale it down designing it for the people in Davao Region.

The DOST XI gained a P4.799- million funding from the national office to revive the centrum. Sales announced that refurbishing of existing exhibits as well as new displays will be offered for public viewing within the year.

Davao City Councilor Pilar Braga, chairperson of the Committee on Education, Science, Technology, Culture and the Arts expressed support on the revival of the centrum as she was one of the pioneer group who lobbied and realized the construction and operation of the former Mindanao Science Centrum in 1999.

The centrum is designed to provide an innovative platform for alternative environment, to nurture creative and innovative culture and to enhance the learning and knowledge acquisition among the youth in the region.

“Our students in the Department of Education are the prime beneficiaries of this project. Once this is developed and re-opened, expect that more and more students from the different Davao Region schools will be visiting the centrum where the students can best learn about science and life,” said Department of Education XI Regional Director Evelyn Fetalvero.

The DepEd XI has committed to help in looking for benefactors to help in sustaining the facility.

The DOST XI also announced that the centrum will also cater not just students but also the indigenous people who will be exposed and trained on science and technology which they can apply in their own community.

Sales explained that the Regional Science Centrum will also house innovations that support the Philippine Space Program.

He said technology such as drones and satellites will have a space in the centrum. This will also serve as the exhibit area of research studies and innovations made by the students of the Philippine Science High School where visiting students from the different parts of the region can learn and experience.
