OVER 100 educators and school leaders from the Department of Education (DepEd) in Eastern Visayas gathered on Wednesday, December 11, for the first "Innovation Caucus" in the region.

"One of the objectives of this activity is to provide an avenue for showcasing innovations conducted in the school, division, and regional levels which addressed the needs of basic education in Region 8," said Dr. Ramir Uytico, education regional director.

Out of 84 entries submitted, only 14 will be presented during the two-day event at the Oriental Hotel in Palo, Leyte.

DepEd Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio, Ceso III, of the Curriculum and Instruction, lauded Uytico for the initiative.

He said the department "needs to be more strategic," following the recent results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa), which showed Filipino students at the bottom among 79 countries in reading, math and science.

In his keynote speech, Antonio urged the educators to "develop the competencies deeply" for the benefits of the learners.

"We innovate because we need to, not because we want to," added Dr. Erick Jon Marmol, Director III, of the Philippine Science High School-Eastern Visayas Campus.

Marmol, who talked about "Nurturing the Innovation Spirit," said there is a need for a "paradigm shift" in the Philippine educational system, noting that the global community "is looking for different types of learning" as influenced by Industry 4.0's technologies or the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

"There is a changing demand. Since demands were changed, of course, education should also change," said the official while urging the educators to be proactive.

Marmol added that innovation is important for the country to produce "productive citizens."

"The learners may not survive if there are no changes. We are constantly realigning our education to the needs of the industry," said Marmol, as he referred on how their school is aligning industry requirements with education.

During the event, the submitted projects of the participants were categorized into Curriculum, Teaching and Learning, and Learning Resources; Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation systems, Research, and Technical Assistance; Partnership and Linkages, Support to Health, and Disaster Risk Reduction Management; and Governance and Leadership (Human Resource Development, Income Generation and Administration).

Since his assumption as regional director in August 2016, Uytico implemented the banner Project Lead or "Lead, empower, and achieve through data-driven decision" to empower school leaders in the region's 13 divisions on the delivery of basic education policies, principles, and services that answer the needs of their respective communities.
