10 January 2020, Quezon City – The Philippine Air Force Headquarters Air Education, Training and Doctrine Command – Air Warfare Center personnel recently visited the DOST-Advanced Science and Technology Institute (DOST-ASTI) to have a tour at its research facilities, particularly the Ground Receiving Station of the Philippine Earth Data Research Observation (PEDRO) Center.

During their visit, the team from Air Warfare Center (AWC) was accompanied by Engr. Joven Javier, Science Research Specialist II of DOST-ASTI. While at the Ground Receiving Station, Mr. Javier discussed with them the features of small satellites such as the Diwata-1, Diwata-2, and Maya-1. After the tour, DOST-ASTI Acting Director Dr. Joel Joseph Marciano, Jr. talked about the current and future space assets like CubeSats, how it will function and be deployed to space. He also shared with them how the small satellite technologies will be useful to the functions of AWC especially that the DOST supports the National Defense through research and development in addressing national concerns through science and technology.

In October 2019, the AWC held an enhancement class titled, “Philippine Space Program: An Important Development for the Future of the Philippine Air Force” with Engr. Joven Javier from DOST-ASTI, Engrs. John Leur Labrador and Kenneth John Ibarra, and Mr. Mark Jayson Felix from the University of the Philippines – Diliman as lecturers. This then led to the interest of AWC to have further knowledge on the Philippine Space Program for the purpose of its research and development activity.
