CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, La Union – This is the time of year that the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) calls for students with aptitude for science and mathematics to take advantage of the call for applicants to the DOST Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS).

DOST Region I has taken the call and encouraged students from the Ilocos Region to file their applications through the DOST Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) Program Campaign, done in collaboration with DZAG Radyo Pilipinas Agoo.  The weekly radio program titled Tekno Presyensya: Syensya ken Teknolohiya para kadagiti Umili, aired the announcement on its 30 June 2022 episode.

Adelisa C. Florendo, DOST-I’s Regional Scholarship Coordinator, spoke about the JLSS Program, with topics on who are qualified to apply, what are the requirements needed, how to go through the application down to the benefits and other considerations to be made before, during, and after the scholarship grant.

The DOST-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) handles the JLSS program which aims to provide scholarships that will finance the education of talented and deserving students who are pursuing degree programs in the fields of science and technology in their third year of college. It also aims to ensure a steady, adequate supply of qualified S&T human resources who can lead the nation toward national progress.

The scholarship comes in three types, namely: (a) Republic Act No. 7687, also known as the “Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994” which provides for scholarships to talented and deserving students whose families’ socio-economic status do not exceed the set cut-off values of certain indicators, and in which qualifiers must pursue priority fields of study in the basic sciences, engineering, other applied sciences, and science and mathematics teaching; (b) DOST-SEI Merit Scholarship Program which is awarded to students with high aptitude in science and mathematics and are willing to pursue careers in the fields of science and technology; (c) Republic Act No. 10612 which aims to strengthen the country’s science and technology education by fast-tracking graduates in the sciences, mathematics and engineering who shall teach science and mathematics in secondary schools throughout the country.?

All interested applicants are encouraged to apply online and upload all the needed requirements through the E-Scholarship Application System at https://jlss.science-scholarships.ph/?

Lastly, Prof. Fortunato T. de la Peña, a staunch supporter of the DOST scholarship programs, was given a video tribute during the program, as his term as the Secretary of DOST ended that day. DOST-I expressed their utmost gratitude and praised Secretary de la Peña for his hardwork, integrity, and dedication to public service. Although the past six years of his service have been a rollercoaster as he dealt with the pandemic's challenges, he was able to persevere and thrive because of his dedication to bringing science to the people, particularly through his full support of the different DOST scholarship programs.
