SIQUIJOR, Nov. 15 (PIA) -- The Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI) in coordination with DOST Siquijor Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC) led by Provincial Science and Technology (S&T) Director Engr. Mario de la Peña and Philippine Information Agency (PIA)-Siquijor represented by Rizalie A. Calibo recently conducted the Expanded National Nutrition Survey (ENNS) Year 1 Results Dissemination Forum at E.I. Suites Hotel here.

The Provincial Nutrition Council members and guests from the Office of the Congressman and Department of Health (DOH)-Center for Health Development-Central Visayas (CHD-CV) attended the activity.

DOST-FNRI presentors were Senior Research Specialists Chona Patalen, Cristina Malabad, and Josie Platon-Desnacido.

They presented a background of DOST-FNRI and the survey and specific data that were obtained from it such as anthropometry, clinical, food security, biochemical, dietary, infant and young child feeding, and maternal health and nutrition data.

Results based on government program participation and socio-economic characteristics of households/individuals were also presented.

The forum aimed to disseminate local survey results that can be used for local level program planning.

It can be recalled that at Year 1 of the ENNS which was conducted last year, the Province of Siquijor was one of the chosen sites nationwide to draw empirical data from the provinces.

It was participated in by respondents from nine barangays in Enrique Villanueva, seven in Larena, five in Lazi, nine in Maria, 10 in San Juan, and 17 in Siquijor.

The Expanded National Nutrition Survey or ENNS is an expanded version of the National Nutrition Survey (NNS) which is a comprehensive survey conducted every five years since 1978 with the latest in 2013.

The goal of ENNS is to draw empirical data from 117 provinces, Highly Urbanized Cities (HUCs) and other special areas nationwide in three years to contribute to the national nutritional and health status of Filipinos for planning nutrition and developmental programs and for timely policy decisions at the national, regional and provincial/highly urbanized cities (HUC) levels.

Last year DOST-FNRI embarked on the first year of the change in the period of survey data collection which is from six months to three years in response to requests from different stakeholders, particularly the local government units (LGUs) to have local survey results that can be used for local level program planning.

With this development, better program planning by the different stakeholders is expected.

Lazi Mayor James Monte, who was one of the attendees in the forum, urged all stakeholders to support the undertaking.

“We will benefit from the results particularly in the crafting of our local respective municipal and provincial food and nutrition plans,” Monte said. (Engr. Joelline Ann D. Ates/SRA&IO-designate/DOST Siquijor PSTC S&T Media Service)
