DOST develops collapsible house, eco-friendly septic system

MANILA - The Department of Science and Technology on Thursday revealed newly developed products and technologies to help government prepare for and respond to disasters.

One such product is a collapsible house called "F-Shelter," developed by Forest Products Research and Development Institute (DOST-FPRDI).

F-Shelter has a floor space of 24 sqm and can be assembled by 4 medium-built workers using simple tools.

The project's team leader, Engr. Christian Camacho, said F-Shelter could accommodate 5 family members.

"Kumpleto itong ating F-Shelter. Mayroon rin itong isang kuwarto, mayroong kusina. May sarili itong toilet at bathroom. Naka-ready na rin ang kuryente at tubig kung saan puwede na lang i-tap kung saan may source ng ilaw at tubig," he said.

Besides being an emergency mobile shelter, it can also serve as a clinic, field office or a mobile classroom.

Due to lack of hygiene facilities at evacuation centers, Adamson University and Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD) developed the eco-friendly septic system or Eco-Sep.

Eco-Sep is a portable and low-cost wastewater treatment system that ensures sanitation and hygienic management of sewage water for temporary shelters.

"Sa isang typical na evacuation area, halimbawa, covered court o gymnasium, karaniwan kulang tayo ng toilets. So ang ginagawa natin ay naglalagay tayo ng portalet. Kaya lang ang portalet maliit ang kaniyang capacity. Kaya ito ay kinakabitan nitong Eco-Friendy Septic System o Eco-Sep para nalilinis na 'yung wastewater na napupunta doon sa Eco-Sep," DOST-PCIEERD director Enrico Paringit said.

A solution called Vigormin, composed of various organo-minerals, is placed in the Eco-Sep to neutralize odor of wastewater.

Meanwhile, the Industrial Technology Development Institute developed a rainwater collection system, which can clean rainwater. A net is also installed to prevent flies from laying eggs.
