High school students get P4-M research funding from DOST-PCIEERD

A total of 10 teams of high school students are set to receive a total of P4.3-M funding from the Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technology Research and Development (DOST-PCIEERD).

According to DOST-PCIEERD, this is for them to bankroll their innovative ideas.

The agency stated that the student researchers will be coming from the Central Luzon State University-University Science High School, Angeles University Foundation Integrated School in Pampanga, South Hill School, Inc. in Laguna, Morong National High School—Senior High School in Bataan, Daraga National High School in Albay, Technological Institute of the Philippines Manila-P. Casal Campus and Can-ayan Intergrated School in Bukidnon.? The projects selected out of the 15 submissions, were:?

•Development and Fabrication of Nanoparticle-infused Intelligent/Smart Food Packaging from Agricultural By-products;?

•Chitosan and Phosphorylated Chitin from Mussel Shells (Perna viridis) as Flame Retardant Bilayer Coating for Linen Fabrics;?

•Development of Tubular Triboelectric Exhaust Filter for Philippine jeepneys;?

•Solar-powered Enzymatic Composting Bin with Arduino-based pH, Moisture level, and Temperature Monitoring System;?

•AmoGOOs: Adhesive Effectiveness of Recycled Styrofoam Waste as an Alternative to Conventional Wood Glue;?

•Utilization of Crab (Brachyura) Shells in Bioplastic Nursery Pot Production;?

•BioHoshi: Developing an Environmentally Sustainable Alternative to Conventional Food Service Ware Disposables;?

•Electric Field Generating Portable Device Against Anthropod Vectors;?

•Converting Single-Use Plastic Wastes into Base Ten Blocks for Mathematics and Converting Polyethylene Plastic Wastes into Base Ten Blocks for Mathematics; and?

•A Teensy Microcontroller-based Photobioreactor for Microalgae Cultivation?

DOST PCIEERD Executive Director Dr. Enrico Paringit congratulated the new researchers and urged them to maximize the opportunity to develop technologies for the Filipino people.??

“This is only a foretaste of what you can become in the future.? We hope that this experience will inspire you to be researchers in the future,” Paringit said.?? Since 2017, DOST through the YIP, has featured the innovativeness of the youth by giving out grants to promising students as well as giving them a platform to present their research and accomplishments.??

The program also aims to motivate and encourage more aspiring young researchers to conduct their own research and create innovative products that are within the Harmonized National Research and Development Agenda (HNRDA).
